WOW! The WE Can Room for our 'We Scare Hunger' campaign was a huge success! Many students from every grade managed to bring in items for our local food bank! We even got a donation of $20.00 from a student in grade 2! Thank you boys and girls for doing your part in making this issue that faces people, even in our own community, in the forefront of our minds so that people don't have to go hungry! You are welcome to keep on bringing in donations until December 1st (that's our Christmas concert evening)so we can continue our efforts of goodwill.
You will see two spelling tests come home on Friday. One was done on Thursday, and if your student wanted to improve their grade, they wrote again today! Better right?! Choir forms went home and must be returned by Monday if you want to sign up! Monday is Halloween! To top it off, it is also Fun Lunch Day! You get to wear your costume in the afternoon. You should hear some of the interesting paragraphs written about Jack-O-Lanterns the students were working on today. We have buddies on Monday so it's looking like another action packed day! Please bring in money and/or non-perishable food item donations for our WE Scare Away Hunger campaign. Let's fill the bucket of families within our community!
The Acorn Art is due in by this Friday. If you are so inclined you can bring in a creative pumpkin to put on display in our hallways. Tomorrow is WE Day and WE are going to see it live streamed into our classrooms and in the Learning Commons too. WE are going to be busy making the Learning Commons into our WE Can room so please bring in any supplies you can think of that will help you when we are working and preparing for Friday. This is going to be great! I know you all have the list words written in your agenda, but just in case here they are: Spelling List Words (for the week of October 24th – 28th ) 1. greatest 9. write 2. right 10. throughout 3. search 11. daughter 4. exhibit 12. signature 5. freeze 13. worried 6. approval 14. definite 7. they’re 15. genuine 8. possessions *Bonus regrouping Today your art along with the Acorn Art fundraiser form went home. Some of the money we raise goes toward new, exciting books!
Our WE Can Room planning is coming along nicely. It was great to see you start putting your ideas into action. I guess since the Grade Sixes are the ones who are hosting this event, WE had better try to lead in bringing in those non-perishable food items and/or money donations! You too can start bringing in items ASAP. Tell your parents what you are doing to contribute during the planning of the WE CAN Room. It's this Friday! Parents, the new spelling words for this week are posted in the blog and should be written in your child's agenda. Check to see if they managed to get them down in alphabetical order :) Happy Sunday boys and girls! I hope you are trying to get your 6 "Inchies" done for our winter art activity. We will have time on Monday to glue them onto the background paper and put any finishing touches on if needed, so make sure you bring back the ones you wanted to work on over the weekend back to school tomorrow. The "Inchies" that are completed look fabulous!
By the way, you all look fabulous in your photo's that went home on Friday. My we have a good looking bunch! Tomorrow afternoon we are spending time working on the logistics of our "WE CAN" Room for the Learning Commons. Come prepared with ideas for games, puzzles, brain teasers, math word problems, riddles etc., because we are working on that with Ms. Curtis in the afternoon. If you have a game or a game board that is suitable, good to go, bring that tomorrow too so we can try it out and make any revisions or provide clues to help the younger students when they are solving/playing the game. Maybe preparing a game isn't your thing. Perhaps you could be in charge of making posters, writing daily announcements, creating a chart to record how many items are coming in for the food bank. So much to do, but it's going to be a great event and it's a worthwhile cause! This week seems to have flown by. I hope you are prepared for the Spelling test tomorrow! You should brush up on your 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication, subtracting with borrowing (especially if zeros are involved), addition with decimals and maybe I'll throw in a division with remainders in there too!
Check out Mathletics - see the card glued into the agenda for login information. Come prepared for your "Inchy" Art ideas because tomorrow we will be working on our winter themed artwork. The Fun Lunch orders and the $5-$6.00 is due in by tomorrow so you can enjoy a fun lunch on Monday, October 31st with the rest of the goblins that day! Do you have an interesting/brainteasing activity for the WE Can Room? Share it with us tomorrow! Halloween dance ticket information went home today! The annual Great Pumpkin Event is coming! You can bring in a decorated pumpkin beginning Wednesday, October 26th. Well a very busy day today and some very good ideas are circulating around our Learning Commoms,...... (let's call it a, "I Think WE CAN" room. Get it can, like a can of food. For the grade 6 WE local initiative, we are preparing to promote the "WE Scare Hunger" campaign by setting up the Learning Commons with puzzles, brain teasers, scavenger hunts, etc. to raise funds and food for our local community, Veteran's Food Bank and/or homeless shelters. Bring you ideas for games and puzzles tomorrow.
Here's a heads up for you. For Acorn Art, the Grade 5/6 teachers thought it might be a good idea to do Winter Inchies. Please bring in any winter themed pictures/photos, wrapping paper, Christmas cards, whatever you can think of that is winter related (picture of hockey skates)so we can do some kind of a creative art piece. There are some great ideas on www.thatartistwoman.com. We will start tomorrow and have to be finished by Friday......Monday at the very latest. Thank you! The learning commons looks fabulous with our Fall Landscape Art, a 'What's the Question?' corner, a 'Who Inspires You?' section, and some of our artwork drawings/paintings depicting the rights of the child. WELL DONE! Please have your parents look over your Number Sense Quiz#1 and finish/correct all of your work. Return tomorrow. Also finish up your work on Mother (Saint) Teresa. Remember to write in complete sentences and return that for tomorrow too. Please take a look on Sunday's blog to see the spelling words posted for this week. The words should also be written in alphabetical order in the agendas too!
Today the students chose when they want to present their Monologue Book Talk. Ask your child when they present and mark it on the calendar and in their agendas. (I'll check and give points tomorrow if your date is recorded!) That way parents, you can help your child prepare and budget their time. Presentations start in four weeks! Use sticky notes in the book or record page numbers in a notebook as you read to remember relevant things you want to share with the class. Don't forget, on top of becoming and talking as if you were the main character, you also have to read a paragraph from the book. What you select to read is key! You might start your presentation by reading a paragraph from the book to inform the audience of the plot/character or after you've shared while in character with the class, read a passage (maybe an ah hah moment) to tie it all together. Look for the hard copy of the criteria on a green handout - sent home today, or your can find it in the Literacy section of the Weebly. Take a look for information about the new playground being built in Important Information/Messages section. Please do your corrections, share with parents, have them sign and return the subtraction sheets that were sent home today. It was fun painting with you today! Thank you to everyone who helped with the clean up! Have a nice evening! I came into school today to do some work so I decided to post your spelling words in advance.
