The boys and girls got their Spelling and POW worksheets today and are to have them completed for this Wednesday. The spelling test will be this Thursday as there is no school for the students on Friday. Please write out your corrections 3 times each for the spelling words and do any math corrections for last Friday's test! Many of you don't have any corrections because you received a score of 25/25 and 15/15! The results keep going up so your hard work is paying off! Way to go!
This Thursday is the Fun Lunch and activities with our buddies! Please don't forget the Mandatory Parent Meeting in the Gym at 6:30! This is the time to bring forward any questions/concerns, learn what you need to bring and find out the cost of the trip. (Mrs. Hugill and the staff hope to see parents in attendance at the meeting and ALL students is attendance at Outdoor School. If there is a problem with financing, please talk to Mrs. Hugill so that a payment plan that works for you can be arranged. We all know that times are tough right now!) The students are asked to fill in their application form for the job they'd like to do for our Classroom Economy.This is starting on Wednesday, so if you are applying for the job of banker and/or police officer a letter of reference is required. It may also be helpful to get a letter of reference for whatever job you are seeking .... (it couldn't hurt!) Keep working on your Number the Stars chapter questions and vocabulary. I'm looking for well written sentences and definitions for the vocabulary neatly written in your Writers Notebook and/or Reading Response Journal.

Happy Chinese New Year! 2017 - The Year of the Rooster!
We've been busy learning about the characteristics of our Chinese Zodiac sign and seeing if what is written applies and somewhat relates to us. Do I really like to strut my stuff and crow to be seen and/or recognized? A big thank you to E.I.'s grandma who helped us celebrate the Year of the Rooster with some special treats! Please keep February 2nd, 2017 at 6:30 open to attend the Mandatory Parent Information Night about Outdoor School. A representative from Camp Chief Hector will be there, along with the teachers and staff from Midnapore School, to answer any questions you have about this excellent field trip. Outdoor School is a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn, explore, play and grow, outside of the classroom dynamic! In Sky Science, students have been looking up to the skies to see if they can recognize any constellations. Your job boys and girls is to choose a constellation, know the star formation that makes up that constellation, and then write about it's origin. Number the Stars chapter questions 1-6 were due today so I hope you all have the vocabulary word meanings written down along with the questions answered in complete sentences. Don't hand them in if you're not done and hand them in on Monday if you need that time to show your best work. Please let me know if this is the case! The new words (Lesson #2) went home today on a worksheet that is to be completed by this Thursday. Lesson #2 Many words in our language end with the ‘el’ sound. If you examine the words in the list they all end with that sound. One of the most common ways to make this sound is with the letter combination “le” (gentle). Other ways to make the sound include the letter combinations, “al” (royal) and “el” (nickel). There are other letter combinations but they are less common. The upside down letter “e” represents a schwa. The sentence is required in order to get full marks. We will be correcting JUMP math pages 81 and 82 tomorrow. Hand in your Phases of the Moon chart that took us up to the end of December. If you don't know for sure, Google phases of the moon and put in the date and it will come up for you to record. Looking forward to more Planet Research projects. Tomorrow the math Problem of the Week (POW) is due. I know that most of you are done as we did discuss how to show your work using a table and write down the answer in a sentence. Please show your parents and have them sign the sheet so that I know you've discussed this and reviewed the process.
Also due tomorrow is the spelling practice worksheet. Please have all of it completed so we can correct it for marks. Remember to use complete sentences! We will be starting the Planet Project presentations tomorrow and further discussing 'the Reason for the Seasons'. Tell your parents about the novel you are reading in your literacy group and the role you have taken on when it's your turn to lead and discuss. Furthermore, tell your parents about the book, "Number the Stars" and the rich topics, connections and discussions we are having in our read aloud. I hope you are enjoying the book as much as I am! The January scholastic book orders are due in tomorrow.

Today students got their spelling/math quiz returned. They recorded what they got out of 15 on the spelling, and the math was out of 4. I'm very proud of the effort many of you are putting into studying the words and the division process. Way to go!
I extended the figurative language (see Wednesday's blog) assignement in visual journal until Monday as many students wanted to color in and embellish their work. I like that too! Read over the pages you've read with your lit. circle group and come prepared with questions, words, connections, summaries, etc. for Monday when you meet with your group again. The Planet project is due on Thursday, January 12th. Book orders are due on Tuesday, January 10th. Have a great weekend and stay warm. I thought I would add this coming week's spelling list words because we are going to 25 words per week! Lesson #1 The “shun” sound Many words contain letters that make the sound “shun”. This sound can be made in a number of different ways. However, most of the time the sound is produced by the letter combination “tion” (direction, education). The next most common way that the sound is produced is by the letter combination “sion” (mansion, confession). Representations, definitions and visual examples of the 8 literary devices that we have discussed in class are due in your Visual Journal for this Friday (homonyms, synonyms, antonyms, onomatopoeia, synedoche, hyperbole, simile, personification). I will give you a bit more class time but budget your time accordingly. The multiplication practice that we've been working on is paying off. Many of you are catching on and understanding how multiplication is helping you with division. Practice makes perfect........well better, so much better! Show your parents how to divide 6 7 3 0 9 by 5, like how we practiced on the board today! The JUMP math pages we worked on today were P. 73 - 76. We will correct those pages tomorrow and keep plowing through. You all worked very hard on this today! Tell your parents what book your are reading with your literacture circle group. Have you decided what role you want to take as a member of your group? Be sure to practice our spelling list words for the test on Friday.
